Quarry Lawn

Paterson Quarry is part of an industrial landscape first developed in the early 1790s that utilized the Great Falls of the Passaic River to power industrial mills.

The basalt and brownstone of Mount Morris was progressively quarried over 200 years, leaving behind a 50-foot tall quarry wall that today encloses a flat open-space along the river. In the early 20th century, mill buildings for silk dying and finishing were built in the open space of the former quarry. Industry waned in the late 20th century, the buildings were left to ruin, and years of industrial use left the site environmentally contaminated.

Environmental remediation will include covering the site with clean soil and adding rain gardens within historic drainages that will filter surface runoff. Stone and masonry walls will be preserved, and former building footprints are made visible on the surface by marking the edges with quarry brownstone. A central path will follow a historic road alignment and will connect to other segments of the planned park system along the river.
